For example: \u201c<span class=\"red\">Your tall.<\/span>\u201d (incorrect), rather than \u201c<span class=\"green\">You\u2019re tall.<\/span>\u201d (correct).<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Other homophones that cause confusion are\u00a0<em>their<\/em>,\u00a0<em>they\u2019re<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>there<\/em>.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><em>Their<\/em>\u00a0is a term to refer to possession \u2013 \u201c<em>Their<\/em>\u00a0house is nearby.\u201d<\/li><li>They\u2019re is the contracted form of \u201c<em>they are<\/em>\u201d \u2013 \u201c<em>They\u2019re<\/em>\u201d<\/li><li>There refers to location \u2013 \u201cIs he hiding over here or over\u00a0<em>there<\/em>?\u201d<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>In this case, we have three homophones that all share the same sound but are written and used very differently.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Yet another area of difficulty is identifying the difference between\u00a0<em>adverbs<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>adjectives<\/em>. Students commonly confuse these and use them interchangeably. The function of adverbs and adjectives is similar \u2013 to modify or describe other words in a sentence. However they are\u00a0\u00a0<span class=\"red\">to be<\/span>\u00a0used under different conditions.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><em>Adverbs<\/em>\u00a0are usually used to modify verbs \u2013 \u2018Anna waited\u00a0<em>anxiously<\/em>\u00a0at the dentist\u2019s office.\u2019 Here, \u201c<em>anxiously<\/em>\u201d tells us more about HOW Anna waited for her appointment with the dentist. It is modifying the verb \u201cwaited\u201d.<\/li><li><em>Adjectives<\/em>\u00a0are usually used to modify nouns \u2013 \u201cDavid parked his\u00a0<em>white<\/em>\u201d Here, \u201c<em>white<\/em>\u201d tells us more about David\u2019s car. It is modifying the noun \u201ccar\u201d.<\/li><\/ul><p>At times, students will use an adjective when they should be using an adverb. For example:<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span class=\"red\">X<\/span>\u00a0\u201cI was running late so I cleaned up\u00a0<span class=\"red\"><em>quick<\/em>.<\/span>\u201d<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span class=\"green\">V\u00a0<\/span>\u201cI was running late so I cleaned up\u00a0<span class=\"green\"><em>quickly<\/em><\/span>.\u201d<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201c<em>Quick<\/em>\u201d is an adjective while \u201c<em>quickly<\/em>\u201d is an adverb.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>As with most things, practice makes perfect. Students may need to work on these repeatedly to be able to distinguish between them and use them correctly.
